The proposed Floating Boardwalk in Belize City has advanced to its next phase following the successful completion and presentation of a preliminary design and feasibility study.

This week, Blue21 presented the study to Bernard Wagner and the Belize City Council, together with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM).

The study concludes that the Floating Boardwalk is both technically and economically achievable. As lead designer and technical partner, Blue21 further developed the original concept proposed by the Mayor by delivering the concept design and feasibility assessment. GCoM supported the project through business case evaluation, financing strategies, and the integration of nature-based solutions, positioning the initiative within a broader climate resilience framework for Belize City.

The feasibility study was co-funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, whose support was instrumental in enabling this first-of-its-kind initiative in the region. Blue21 also contributed in kind through engineering and design expertise.

The proposed floating boardwalk aims to create new high-quality public space along Belize City’s historic waterfront, support tourism and local economic development, and enhance coastal protection and climate adaptation through innovative floating infrastructure. Project partners will now continue working with local stakeholders on the next steps toward financing and implementation.
